- COMELY My A@@ View

Re: Netsuke............the beat goes on: Probably so!.....The only reason I know the stupid word is because someone played COMELY on me in a net game. On looking it up, I saw COMELILY as the adverb. I can't find it in any dictionary anywhere. Even comely didn't sit well with me. I don't recall anyone ever playing it on me, which is why I checked it up.
: : : Hey KEV, try this one ....COMELILY...weird huh? I deliberately didn't play it for fear of the above EVEN thought I knew it was legit. The above is why this is all so strange. To want to play scrabble you have to have more than a Dick and Jane vocabulary. Comely is such a basic word. To cite it as an example of a word you didn't know is just beyond all logic.

I don't find anything strange here at all. What does ones daily vocabulary have to do with playing scrabble? COMELY is simply not part of my vocabulary, I would use a whole hosts of synonyms such as... attractive, beautiful, good looking, lovely, pretty, etc. It's simply NOT a word I use nor do I ever recall anyone ever using it with me in a game of scrabble or in real life.To say I cited it as a word I didn't know is inaccurate, I said it just didn't sit well with me (my choice of words) and was curious as to its real meaning. If that is beyond logic, then so be it!

I'm not sure what's weirder: parteegirl thinking SOFTHEAD is a word most NSA intermediates know or larrysden thinking that COMELY is unusual.- Re: COMELY My A@@ View
by antimaven on June 12, 2002 at 06:46:32 PDTThe issue here is the level of vocabulary being considered, as, for example, formal, literary, colloquial, slang, etc. COMELY is indeed a relatively ordinary literary word; it is not particularly frequent in workaday conversation. I suspect, based on my personal observations, that its conversational usage is more frequent in Britain than in North America. (E.g., "Aye, she's a comely lass.")

: Finally some scrabble-worthy comments on COMELY/COMELILY. COMELY is not in my speaking vocabulary and it is not, to my knowledge, in the speaking vocabulary of anyone I have spoken to in the last 60 years. It is in my reading (words I know) vocabulary, as opposed to recognition vocabulary (I've seen it but don't know what it means).: But when I encounter a word like COMELY, which I THINK I know it's usage and definition, I always look it up later in the OSPD to see if they have any surprises for me - like COMELILY -and to double check my assumption that COMELIER and COMELIEST are good, and that COMELIES is a phony.
: Make a habit of doing this and you will get hundreds of surprises. Do it more and you'll get thousands of "surprises". ... ... ... Graytst.

Hi Graytst,It is somewhat comforting a great player as yourself NOT having run into such a "common word" in your years. I was getting the feeling I was the only recluse here. Amazingly, I've never had it played on me until recently. I do the same checking as you've described, hence COMELILY! I must say, MANLILY was new to me though as I've never felt the need to check MANLY:))
As I've mentioned previously, simply not knowing a word doesn't make it "uncommon" generically. My first inkling to it "in my mind" was it meant BECOMING which is not really its meaning. As far as NETSUKE is concerned, it was played on me some time ago and it stuck with me. I've since played it two or three other times. Always appreciate your input.
Thanks, larrysden

- Unusual?....... View
by larrysden on June 11, 2002 at 08:34:21 PDT
When did I say that?....I simply stated it was not part of my vocabulary. If you, I or anyone else not know a particular word doesn't necessarily make it unusual. If you're going to quote me, at least be accurate.

You didn't know what COMELY meant and so you looked it up in the dictionary, which suggests that it was unusual to you. Maybe I'm inferring too much here.

"Dr. Cameron, could you please use "comely" in a sentence?""Certainly."
"It was my privilege to delouse the netsuke on the comely geisha," noted the exterminator comelily.

:: "It was my privilege to delouse the netsuke on the comely geisha," noted the exterminator comelily.
:
Technically speaking, delousing would be performed by a physician or by one's self. An exterminator is not required since once the lice detach themselves from it's human host, it will perish quite quickly.
