Guidelines for UIC Swiss Staff

Below are a few guidelines so that all members of Staff know exactly what is expected. Your fullest help and cooperation is appreciated at all times.

TOURNEY SETTING: The tourneys are created in advance by the Head Admin for the sake of consistency on wording and imagery, so no hosting member of Staff is required to set up any new tourneys him or herself. All hosting members of Staff are given HTD access to be able to administer a tourney set up in advance, so always enter the system via the HTD link.

PUNCTUALITY: A member of Staff hosting a tourney must arrive in the lobby at least 15 minutes before the start. If he or she arrives less than 15 minutes before the start, he or she may be replaced by another TD. Punctuality is ALL IMPORTANT so always be on time.

NO SHOWS: A member of Staff must be aware of Rule 1.11 regarding a 'no show' player, who should be removed prior to Round Three, unless instructed by the player, or a member of the player's team, to keep him or her in.

THE RULES: A member of Staff must read and fully understand the UIC Swiss Rules and be aware of what is permitted and not permitted within the competition. For the sake of consistency, a member of Staff must be fully aware of the competition rules at all times, and must never deviate from these rules without the permission of the Head Admin.

CONDUCT: A member of Staff must conduct him or herself in an orderly, courteous, respectful and appropriate manner at all times. He or she is expected to never cuss or abuse, or lower himself or herself to a level which is unacceptable or improper, and, as a privileged representative of UIC Swiss, to always deal with any issues courteously and properly, whatever provocation is being faced. There is no place for rudeness by a member of staff at any time.

• PAIRINGS: A TD may not, under any circumstances, alter any pairings in a tournament. This is strictly forbidden irrespective of the number of repeated pairings in any round. If a player moans about repeated pairings or games between players of the same league, a TD should refer them to the article entitled 'UIC Swiss Special Report: Repeated Pairings' under 'Admin Reports' on the custom website (the same info is included to the right of this page).

• CLOSING A TOURNEY: A tournament must be closed and started by a TD on time as per the schedule under normal circumstances. If a registered player is attempting to jump a tournament but is facing log-in difficulties, a tournament may be delayed by no more than three minutes. Once the three minutes have expired, a tournament must be closed, irrespective of a player still attempting to jump. No tournament must be delayed to allow a new player to sign up.

DELIBERATE SLOW PLAY OR TIME WASTNG: In accordance to Rule 3.9, deliberate slow play or time wasting is not allowed. If a member of staff needs to act upon a case of slow play or time wasting, he or she must (1) politely ask the player to speed up or stop playing excessive safeties or stop delaying the game. If there is no change in how the player is playing and slow play continues, the member of staff must (2) officially warn the offender, along the lines of (in CAPITAL LETTERS), "WARNING FOR DELIBERATE SLOW PLAY – IF YOU CARRY ON PLAYING THIS WAY YOU WILL BE DQ'D". If the disqualification is applied after this FAIR WARNING, the TD must (3) call the DQ at the table in CAPITAL LETTERS – "(PLAYER'S NAME), YOU ARE DQ'D UNDER RULE 3.9", and then mark the offending player's opponent as the winner. Screenshots must be taken as evidence that the procedure has been applied correctly.

PENALTIES: If an Admin needs to box a player, it must be done in accordance with the penalties listed under Rule 7, by using the correct code specified. For example, for a member's disrespect, "7.4.v. General unsporting behaviour (disrespect)" must be entered into the comments box at the time of boxing. The Admin must add his or her name; any unnamed boxing will be removed. Any box made incorrectly may be overturned at the discretion of the Head Admin.

TD SPAMS: Below are listed various spams which can be copied and pasted if required by a TD.

UIC SWISS HISTORY IN BRIEF

UIC Swiss was originated by Julie (xtc.goddess) and Roy (judge.0000) after they decided to create a True Swiss competition to run alongside the main 5v5 UIC season as a secondary competition. Julie, who was Head Admin of UIC, was initially the HA in UIC Swiss too, before Roy took over the role further down the line.

The first UIC Swiss was run as a trial competition over four weekly tournaments in November and December 2007. Five players were allowed to jump the tournament from each league. As a starting point, week 1 of the trial was played over 6 rounds but was reduced to 5 for the remaining 3 weeks. The trial season was won by Straightshots with Freedom in second place and Breakers Alley taking third. United Pool's king_of_united was the first individual winner. Roy set up the first website and Nigel (e_n_d_i_k_a_y and later en_dk) supplied the banner and trophies.

With the trial being deemed successful, the first official season of UIC Swiss ran along side UIC for 22 weeks, starting January 2008, and attracted no fewer than 29 leagues over the course of the season. Two separate weekly tournaments were set up, one named the UK Tourney arranged at 2pm EST and the other named the US Tourney at 7pm EST. The number of rounds was set at 5 and 5 players from each team were permitted to join. In June 2008, Straightshots carried on where they left off in the trial competition by winning the inaugural season. Runners-up were Breakers Alley and Deadstrokes finished third.

There are no records of the scoring system but we do have the final standings of that opening season. For the record, here are the final positions of that first-ever season, together with the bizarre high points tallies accumulated by each team over 22 weeks! 1. SS 2,934 points; 2. BA 2,583; 3. DS 2,204; 4. X8B 2,064; 5. EP 1,363; 6. BnR 1,194; 7.DP 907; 8. TC 614; 9. BP 604; 10. UP 591; 11. PRO 553; 12. PP 506; 13. PFN 488; 14. TP 468; 15. RP 441; 16. FR 369; 17. UNY 271; 18. 8BR 261; 19. LPL 183; 20. TPL 161; 21. CZ 154; 22. LS 92; 23. REG 90; 24. CW 74; 25. AA 52; 26. MP 32; 27. EPL 29; 28. VS 25; 29. OC 20. How many of these leagues can you name by their initials? Sadly, many of them have demised but it's good that the archives have recorded their existence for posterity!

UIC SWISS SPECIAL REPORT: REPEATED PAIRINGS
For those of you who hate repeated pairings happening in UIC Swiss, including games between players of the same team, the following may be of interest, if only to explain why UIC Swiss has adopted Rule 2.10. This article has been produced in a 'question and answer' format, because it covers the issues raised by one or two members.

QUESTION: "I have just played the same person three times in one tourney – ridiculous! Is there a rule in UIC Swiss covering pairings?"
ANSWER:
Yes. Rule 2.10 reads as this: 'A TD may not, under any circumstances, alter any pairings in a tournament. This is strictly forbidden irrespective of the number of repeated pairings in any round. A TD who alters any pairing will be removed and will face sanctions with under 7.1. Category A(i).'

QUESTION: "OK, but I do not see why TDs are not permitted to change pairings! If they could, we would avoid the same pairings, or too many same-league pairings. I hate playing people in my own league. Why do you have this rule?"
ANSWER:
Very simple. Swapping pairings is open to abuse and manipulation, let alone other logistical problems. A TD could theoretically alter a pairing to suit his or her league.

QUESTION: "I still cannot see why swapping pairings would be an issue. What kind of logistical problems could there be?"
ANSWER:
These questions would arise for a TD – which players should be swapped? And for who? For example, cbc_aceman and ds_top.pooler have been paired for the third time – how does the TD go about choosing the opponents? Would they be stronger or weaker opponents? What happens if there are four repeated pairings in one round or four DS v DS pairings? Do they all get changed and again, for whom?

Say the TD from SS is making a swap, what is to stop him or her from giving the SS player on 4-0 a lesser opponent on 2–2 or even 1–3 instead of the correct opponent on 3–1, in the hope of improving the SS player's chances of winning? And we could have two CBC players both on 4–0 due to play one another in Round 5, yet the TD from SS wants to get the top-scoring SS player on 3–1 to play one of the leading CBC players in an attempt to share the tourney. How fair is that? If swapping was allowed, this could theoretically happen.

Now onto the other logistical problems. Clearly, the process of swapping players would be open to unfair interpretation and manipulation to suit a team or teams, and would delay the next round advancing whilst the swaps were being made. A TD would have to note previous games to recognise possible repeats, and also change every same-team pairing. All very time-consuming which could potentially cause a nightmare with a tournament lasting over 3 hours!

QUESTION: "Yeah, but nobody would cheat, would they? Only the repeated pairings should be swapped."
ANSWER:
Well, we would rather not put a TD into the position of being tempted to make incorrect or unfair swaps. Therefore, it is far easier – and considerably safer and fairer – to have a blanket ban on any swaps. It is very clear that allowing a TD to swap players could be opening a can of worms. We do not want the integrity of a scrupulously fair competition challenged in any way.

QUESTION: "So you think me playing members of my own league 4 times in 5 rounds is fair?"
ANSWER:
Absolutely 100% fair! It's called 'tough titty'! That's the way the cookie crumbles! Get over it! Call it what you will, it's the nature of random pairings. And to protect the integrity of our TDs, and, more importantly, the competition itself, our Tds are NOT allowed to alter anything. It's that simple.

QUESTION: "Am I not entitled to say that I think tourneys are rigged?"
ANSWER:
Not advisable – best to keep your comments to yourself! Calling a tournament rigged is accusing a TD of cheating. And if you do that and bring the name and reputation of UIC Swiss into disrepute, you will be boxed for at least 30 days. Rule 2.10 is there for a good reason – it is the best way to prevent a tournament from being rigged!
